Digital Zoom
As opposed to optical zoom - which is a magnification of the image by the lens system through changing
its focal length
and so enlarging a chosen part of the image to make it frame-filling - the term digital zoom refers to
cropping the central part of the frame to make up a new separate image. The more sophisticated systems
will then interpolate the cropped part back to the camera's full resolution if so desired.
The quality of your image will depend on the maximum resolution of the camera and what you have planned
to use the image for.
If you don't need maximum resolution the quality will be good enough for web use, monitor display or
even small prints of say up to 5 by 7.File sizes will be smaller, since you only need to save part
of the full screen image. An added advantage will be that, as the camera only meters the zoomed section,
a better exposure for that particular area can be achieved than if the exposure had been determined by
metering the full screen image.
Zoom can be a useful tool when you have reached the limits of the optical zoom or when working with a
fixed lens camera, but remember that its effect can also be achieved in most image manipulation programs.
